The population of Sukkur district (comprising four tehsils) was 908 thousands according to 1998 census. The average annual growth rate of population during 1981 to 1998 is 2.88 percentage.

Sukkur district derives its name from the head quarter town Sukkur. It is situated from 27°-05 to 28°-02 north latitudes and from 68°-47 to 69°-43 east longitudes. It covers an area of 5165 sq. km. It is bounded on the north by Ghotki & Shikarpur districts, on the south by Khairpur, on the east by Ghotki & Jaisalmir (India) and on the west by Shikarpur and Khairpur districts
